Northfield Mountain Trip

We visited Northfield Mountain!

First we started our day with a slide show about the creatures we would discover in the pond.

Our leader showed us the correct way to carefully "catch" a pond creature.

 We discovered creatures of all sizes!  

Slugs and Leeches...

 Insects...

 Beetles...

Then, we added them to our collection buckets.

 Following our captures, we brought our creatures inside to investigate.

 We looked closely at them through the use of magnify glasses, microscopes and careful observation.

 We took a break for an inside lunch then back outdoors we went!

We broke into groups and played many outdoor games that helped us think about our amazing earth and seasonal changes.

 We learned how to count the years of growth of a pine tree.  Ask your child to teach you!

Perimeter

We took a sneak peak at third grade measurement!  

After we learned about perimeter in the classroom, we headed outside with our yard sticks.

First, we created a rectangle and measured the sides in inches.

 Then we labeled the length of each side.

Last, we computed the perimeter by adding up all of the sides.

Way to go mathematicians!  :o)

Simple Machine Presentations

Look at what we learned about simple machines!

We worked in small groups to create a definition for our simple machine.  

Then, we revised and edited our work.  

After that, we discussed ideas of how to show how our simple machine works.  

Next, we decided on an illustration and cooperatively made it happen!

Our work is proudly displayed in the hallway outside of our classrooms.

We're impressing everyone who walks by!

Be sure to ask your child what they learned about their simple machine!

Last, we presented our work to our friends.

Madlibs on the iPads

We had a ball with Madlibs!

We took turns thinking of verbs, adjectives, nouns and adverbs to fill into a silly story.

You should have heard the giggles in the classroom when we read them aloud!  :o)

Sharing our Speeches

We shared our POWERFUL speeches with Mr. Trill and the third grade last Friday!

The learners in the third grade were very impressed with our ideas!  They gave us many compliments and noticed that we were trying to PERSUADE them with our well written speeches.

Come by and read them for yourself when you are waiting for your family conference.

They are on the wall outside our classrooms.  We bet you'll be impressed too!

Multiplication Stories

We wrote our own multiplication stories for our friends to solve.

We read them and made sure our answers matched.

If our answers didn't match, we talked about why and tried them again.

Last, we placed our answers on the bottom of the posters to show our thinking.

Ta-Da!   This is how we KNOW that 7x5=35.
